What hardwood work do older Athens houses need?
In a house from before 1960, there may be solid oak under carpet or vinyl. If the boards are thick enough and dry, that is a refinish or repair job, not a new floor. The refinish or replace page walks through the check. Pet stains, old water, and earlier sandings decide how much is left.
Newer Athens subdivisions are a different job, closer to the Madison page: builder floors, slabs, and engineered hardwood. This site does not claim Athens jobs. The projects page explains why there are no photos yet.
Do Athens historic district rules cover floors?
The city design guidelines say local designation requires review for changes to the exterior appearance of a property in a local historic district. Source: Athens historic district design guidelines, City of Athens. Interior floors are not described as part of that review. Confirm with the City of Athens before you start, especially if the job touches a porch or an exterior door.
Athens is not Huntsville. The City of Huntsville inspections FAQ does not apply here. Source: Inspections FAQ. Addresses outside Athens city limits are Limestone County: Limestone County Commission. This site has not verified an Athens or Limestone County floor permit rule and will not state one.
How do you request an estimate for an Athens address?
Send the ZIP, the age of the house if you know it, the rooms, and what is under the carpet if you have looked. Call (256) 440-7100 or use the estimate form. The answer may be that no contractor covers that ZIP yet. National sanding ranges are on the refinishing cost page, and the national install average about $4,723 per project (Angi, 2026, https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-hardwood-flooring-cost.htm) is not an Athens quote.
The Decatur page covers the other older city west of Huntsville, across the Tennessee River.
