How is solid hardwood different from engineered wood?
Solid boards are wood all the way through, so they can usually be sanded more than once if earlier sandings left enough thickness. Engineered boards put a wood face on a core, which moves less and is the usual slab product. Solid strip wants a wooden subfloor it can be nailed to.
That is why older Huntsville houses over crawl spaces still fit solid oak, and many newer slabs do not.
| Question | Solid hardwood | Engineered hardwood |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | One piece of wood | Wood face on a core |
| Usual Huntsville fit | Wood subfloor over a crawl space | Slab, if the product allows the moisture |
| Fastening | Nail or staple to wood | Glue-down or floating on a slab; some products nail to wood |
| Later sanding | Often more than once, if thickness remains | Only as far as the wear layer allows |
| Humidity | Gaps can open in heated winters and close in humid summers | Moves less, and a wet core can still swell |
Seasonal gaps in solid floors are the wood working. Filling every winter line can crush the boards when a humid summer closes them. The engineered page covers wear layers. The installation overview covers acclimation for both.
Should solid hardwood be nailed down or glued down?
Nail-down or staple-down is the usual method for solid strip over plywood. The subfloor has to be thick enough to hold the fastener and flat enough that boards do not bridge dips. Squeaks often start in a subfloor that was not fastened to the joists before the hardwood went down.
Glue-down is common for engineered flooring on concrete, using an adhesive rated for the moisture that was measured. It is not the default for solid strip. A floating solid floor is not the ordinary solid-strip install. If a quote says floating, ask which product it is. Pinching the expansion space with tight trim is how a floor buckles in an August in North Alabama.
Where does solid hardwood struggle in Madison County?
It struggles on damp crawl spaces, on slabs, and in houses that swing from a humid summer with the air off to a hard winter heat. Huntsville’s humidity is enough to open small gaps in winter and close them in summer. That movement is normal.
A vapor-tight rug left down for months, or a house left damp, is what turns normal movement into cupping. Red oak is already in a lot of older in-town floors. New installs often ask for white oak because the grain is quieter. Either species is still solid wood if the board is solid. The grade, the width, and the subfloor matter more than the neighborhood name.
Can you put solid hardwood on a concrete slab?
Usually no. A ground-level or below-grade slab can hold moisture that solid wood will take up from underneath. Engineered flooring, after a test the manufacturer names, is the product for that slab. Installing solid anyway and hoping is how a buckle shows up after the furniture is back.
If someone proposes a sleeper system or a plywood deck over the slab, ask which product warranty allows it and who repairs the height change at doors and stairs. That assembly is not a casual add-on. Details are on the slab page.
What should a solid hardwood quote include?
It should name the species, the grade, nail-down, who moves furniture, shoe mold, transitions, and stairs as their own line. Stairs are not a footnote. The stairs page explains why treads are priced apart. This site does not publish a local per-foot rate.
The national average about $4,723 per project (Angi, 2026, https://www.angi.com/articles/how-much-does-hardwood-flooring-cost.htm) is a project average, not a solid-oak rate you can multiply. Questions on this page
Should solid hardwood be nailed down or glued down?
Over plywood, solid strip is typically nailed or stapled. Glue-down is the usual method for engineered flooring on a slab, not for solid strip on a wooden subfloor. The product instructions decide, not a habit.
Can you install solid hardwood on a concrete slab?
Usually no, especially on a ground-level or below-grade slab in Madison County. Engineered flooring is the product built for that condition, and only after a moisture test.
